Animals:
Courtesy and consideration with regard to your pet(s) means following the law.
* Dogs may not run at large.  Your pet must be on a leash when it is off your property.
* All dogs over 6 months of age must have a current dog license. 
* Report lost, stray, abused or animal incidents.
* Keeping a dog which disturbs neighbors by barking is not permitted.
* Pet owners must remove any animal waste deposited by their animal on public and private property.

NOTE: You are bound by the terms of your lease in regards to animals.
Cars/Parking:
* Make sure your license plates are up to date or you will be towed and it is very expensive to bail out your car.  If it is towed, call 235-9361 for directions on what to do.
* Parking in the wrong direction on the street is a ticketable offense.
* Do not park on unpaved yards, lawns or in the alley.  Keep motorcycles or mopeds off sidewalks.
* Please do not visit with people in cars topped in the middle of the street.  Please ask them to pull over to the curb.
* Following a heavy snow, pay attention to the local news reports for plowing and parking prohibitions.  Again, your car can be towed during snow removal times.
* Inoperable vehicles are not permitted on the street or in your yard.
* In the fall, pay attention to the news for leaf pick-up schedule and avoid parking in fron of piles to be vacuumed.
* Abandoned Vehicles - Vehicles locared on your property must be operable or they may be towed.  If you have a vehicle on your property or in your neighborhood that is inoperable, please contact Code Enforcement at 235-9486. 
Guests/Visitors:
Please remember that you are responsible for the behavior or your guests or visitors with regard to all the guidelines.
Noise:
Most of use live within 25' of our neighbors. Some may work nights and need to sleep during the day.  Others work at home, are ill or are studying and need quiet.  Everyone is entitled to enjoy their home in peace and quiet at all times.

What is too loud?
* Music, TV or voices that can be heard at all outside your apartment, home or car.
* Machinery such as lawn mowers, leaf blowers, power tools operated before 7 am - 8 pm. (We suggest not before 9 am on weekends.) 
* Dogs barking incessantly.
* Party noice beyond 11 pm by law, after 9 pm by neighborly standards.  If you're having an outside party or even just visiting with friends, move it inside by 9 pm and quiet it down.
* Car horns: Visitors using a car horn to announce their arrival.  Ask them to park and knock on your door or call you on a cell phone.
* Ask the noise maker to politely quiet it down.  If they do not cooperate, call the police non-emergency number 235-9361.
* For cars with loud stereos, record the license plate if possible (take a cell phone picture) and call 235-5982 with the information.
Keep it Clean!
Homeowner or Tenant, please think about the area around your house, including the alley behind and the street in front as your little part of this planet.  That meand cultivating it, keeping it litter-free (even if you didn't do it).
Trash:
New residents: If you do not have a standardized trash container (dark green with a City logo on it) call 574-277-8823
* Place your bagged household garbage (not yard waste, recyclables or construction materials) in the city container only assigned to your house.  Other containers/bags will not be picked up.
* If your trash is picked up in the alley, place it with the arrow pointing towards the alley and keep the area around your can picked up.
* If your trash is picked up in the street, place it with the arrow pointing towards the street with the lid opening facing the street.
* Put out your trash bin by 6 am on collection day.
* Bring in your trash can when it is emptied

Big Items:
Furniture, mattresses, building materials, old appliances and other junk can request a "Special Pickup" by calling 311.

Bad Stuff:
Electronics, TV's, computers, paints, hazardous household chemicals may be dropped off at:  1105 E. 5th Street, Mishawaka, IN.  Call for hours and details at 235-9971

IUSB holds an electronic waste day once a year.
Curbs and Sidewalks:
Sidewalks and curbs are your responsibility.  Keeping it clear of debris is considerate and smart since it prevents injuries.
Lawns / Yard Waste:
* You need to use paper biodegradable bags for grass and leaves.
* Pickup is on the same day as regular trash pickup April thru November.
* For an annual fee, large rolling bins are also available for yard waste.
* Larger brush or limbs must be cut to less than 4 feet and tied up in bundles.
* Leaf pickup is scheduled by City areas.  Rake the leaves onto the tree lawn, not the street, so they may be vacuumed up.
Recycling:
* You can recycle newspapers, cardboard, clean glass, plastics 1 - 5 and 7, aerosol cans, phone books. (See list they provide)
* Place your recycle bin out by 6 am.

Snow Removal / Sweeping:
By law, snow over 3" must be removed from the sidewalks within 24 hours of falling.  
Preventing Crime:
Neighbors can work together to reduce the incidence of crime.  Knowing who your neighbors are, being in communication with each other and on the look out for suspicious activity can go a long way in creating a safer environment.  The Crime Prevention Unit of the South Bend Police Department is a great resource for residents.  They can provide home security surveys, help organize neighborhood watch programs, neighborhood notices and present to neighborhood groups on crime related issues.  Call 235-9401 or 235-9201
Curfew:
* Under 15 years old: After 11 pm and before 5 am, every night
* 15 - 17 years old: After 1am and before 5 am on Saturday and Sunday; after 11 pm on Sunday - Thursday or before 5 am Monday - Friday
* Exceptions are made if the minor is in the company of a parent, guardian or adult specified in writing by the parent (which the child has with them); if participating, going to or returning home from lawful employment, school sanctioned activity, religious event or activity sponsored by a civic or public organization supervised by an adult.
Renters' Insurance:
If you are tenant, you should purchase renters' insurance for the contents of your apartment.  Your landlord's insurance does not cover your possessions in the event of burglary or fire.
